The beat generation is a cornerstone phenomenon in culture. In the years after the Second World War, a group of young and protest-minded authors changed the face of the United States with their texts, and thus the entire Western world. It was only then that the genesis of the counterculture led to hippies, punks, and rappers, and the genesis of civil society to environmentalism and the sexual revolution. The sources flow from the American streets of the 40s and 50s, filled with broken but blissful people who forged a new era with typewriters in the harsh realities of post-war America.
